Solve social problems such as marine pollution
Further increase the recycling of plastic resources
-Reduce the amount of plastic used and expand the use of environmentally friendly materials-

Meiji Co., Ltd. (President: Katsuya Matsuda) will further strengthen the recycling of plastic resources under the “Meiji Group Sustainable Development 2026 Vision” to solve social problems such as marine pollution caused by plastic waste.

(1) Efforts to strengthen
(1) The amount of plastic used in products such as plastic spoons is gradually reduced
We will work to gradually reduce the amount of plastic used in our products by switching to eco-friendly materials for the plastic spoons that come with our products and considering how to provide them.
Specifically, we’ve started considering switching the plastic spoons that come with our “Zabas” line of powdered proteins to eco-friendly materials, and we’re aiming to complete the switch by 2025.
In addition, regarding milk powder “Meiji Smile” and “Meiji Step”, we will gradually reduce the amount of plastic used in products by 2025 by considering how to provide the attached plastic spoon. ..

(2) Expand the use of environmentally friendly materials in PET bottle containers
We are working to reduce the amount of plastic used by reducing the weight of PET bottle containers such as “Meiji Probiotic Yogurt R-1 Drink Type”. In addition, we aim to increase the use of recycled plastic*1 and biomass plastic*2 in PET bottle containers to more than 70% by 2025 and 100% by 2030, thereby achieving zero new use of fossil raw materials . Increase.

(3) Expand the use of environmentally friendly materials in containers other than PET bottle containers
From January 2021, the plastic cups used in the “Zabas” series of powdered proteins will be gradually changed to environmentally friendly biomass plastic mixing containers, and the change will be completed by the end of fiscal year 2021. In addition, by switching the plastic used in the bottle caps of “Meiji Delicious Milk” to eco-friendly materials, the use of biomass plastics will exceed 1,500 tons by 2025 and 2030. Our goal is to exceed 3,000 tons.

(2) Initiatives so far
As a leading food company, we have formulated a plastic resource recycling policy in accordance with the milestones stipulated in the “Plastic Resource Recycling Strategy” formulated by the government in May 2019, and the whole company is united. Recycling of plastic resources.
① Reduce the amount of plastic
Our goal is to reduce the amount of plastic used in unidirectional plastic containers and packaging by 25% or more by FY2030 compared to FY2017, and we expect to be 7,700 tons less by FY2030 than in FY2017. Specifically, for various PET bottle containers of the “Meiji Probiotic Yogurt” drink type, the weight of the PET bottle will be gradually changed from 13g*3 when the product was launched to 8.7g to reduce the amount of plastic used. .Through these efforts, a total reduction of approximately 5,300 tons of plastic is expected over the five-year period from 2017 to 2021.
(2) Expand the use of environmentally friendly materials
For the packaging bag of “Marshmallow Marshmallow Mix” released in August 2021, we adopted a packaging bag containing recycled plastic, which is the first recycled PET bottle. In addition, the plastic straws (about 650 million per year) attached to products such as “Meiji Delicious Milk”, “Zabas MILK PROTEIN” and “Meiji May Balance Mini Cup” have been switched to straws containing biomass plastic.
We will continue to work to strengthen the recycling of plastic resources and contribute to solving social problems such as ocean plastic problems.
*1 Plastic made from recycled waste PET bottles.
*2 Plastics derived from renewable organic resources such as plants. A new plastic material is attracting attention because it can reduce carbon dioxide emissions without relying as much as possible on fossil fuels.
*3 In 2002, “Meiji Probiotic Yogurt LG21 Drink Type” was launched.
