It’s been about a month since Elden Ring came out. Some players have already cleared the level, and some have just started playing. In this article, I would like to split the first and second part to tell the fading people who still like to take risks in the space between them, the charm and usage of “Parii”. This time, we will provide the first part under the name “Exercise/Basics”.Note that this post also includes the boss’s name, video, and battle drill.
“Elden Ring” is an action role-playing game from From Software. At the heart of this work is an adventure in the vast wilderness “land between spaces”. On the other hand, while inheriting the combat system of the studio’s previous work, it also incorporates new elements such as ghost summoning. At the same time, while it exists in the studio’s past work, some elements of Elden Ring have become less noticeable. “Parii” is a technique of creating gaps through enemy attacks.
what is parry
Parry is a familiar element in the Dark Souls series. It’s a technique that creates the chance of a “death blow” attack by giving up an enemy’s attack and dealing with it the moment it’s attacked. Although difficult to master, it is also an effective technique in one-on-one battles against powerful enemies if skilled. The fun of taking an enemy attack in the wrong direction and joining a deadly counterattack is irresistible.
However, I have to say that the shadow of “Elden Ring” has faded a little. This is because in addition to parrying, there are many powerful combat skills, and there will also be many powerful enemies that are difficult to parry in this work. Plus, lethal injuries tend to be milder than the studio’s past work, and there’s no denying that the rewards of high-risk, high-reward parry are dwindling. So, has Parry lost any value in this work? The author’s opinion is no. The thrill of parrying is living well, and for some bosses, it is still capable of acting as an ace. First of all, I want to tell you how to master the parry and enjoy the fun of ending.
Put on a round shield and watch the enemy chisel
Parry’s movements change based on the active shield and weapon. For example, the shield in the middle is a gesture of squeezing sideways as is, while the peeling dagger and round shield are gestures that extend the shield in front of you and wipe it. And depending on the action, the judgment length of the block that can be blocked and the block generation time delay of the button input will also change. In other words, the difficulty of parrying varies by gear.
The small shield “Buckler” can be said to have the best blocking performance among the equipment that can be obtained from the beginning. Although its performance as a shield such as slash rate is unreliable, it has a special block move called “Buckler parry”. Bucklers are also the starting equipment for “Rogues” and can also be purchased from NPC Gostock at Stormwind Castle. Of course, parrying with other equipment such as small shields, peeling daggers, etc. is also possible. It’s best not to force the use of clasps to be excellent, but to be familiar with your favorite tools. Many of Parry’s spin-off moves are also featured in this production. While such operations are useful, they may not be available early on. So, in the first part, we’re going to explain the basics of Buckler Block tactics and Blocking that you can use right from the start of the game.
When actually blocking, the closer you are to the enemy, the easier it is to succeed. Instead of playing the image of the enemy’s weapon, stare at the enemy’s hand and hit the block with that hand when “attack starts”. In other words, the trick is to equip a small round shield, stick it to the enemy, see the movement of the enemy’s hand, and then hit it. The reasons for these conclusions and the mechanism behind this work will be explained in detail in Section II. The performance of derivative maneuvers will also be handed over to the second part.
Raise the base of your parry
Parrying may have the image of a “defensive technique” to parry an enemy attack. In reality, however, it’s an “attack technique” that pierces the enemy’s attack gap, causing him to lose his posture. As for the actual mechanism, it is believed that the block temporarily produced an invisible “block judgment” and hit the enemy’s “block judgment”. In Paris, the timing of the moment needs to be adjusted, and it is important to understand when the judgment occurs. However, because it is invisible, it is difficult to grasp the timing of the block judgment. While you can use your body to memorize it during a fight with an enemy, I recommend using the “Wall Blocking Practice” for timing.
The wall blocking practice method, as the name suggests, is a method of blocking a wall and grasping the timing. When you activate a parry against a wall, you will get a hit effect like sparks or dust, depending on the weapon type and the material of the wall. As a result of the author’s verification, I feel that this effect is similar to the activation of parry judgment, which seems to be not bad. In other words, by hitting the parry against the wall, you can easily check the timing of the parry judgment. In addition, when engaging with an enemy, a small amount of stamina will be consumed at the moment when the block judgment occurs, so this can be used as a guide. However, timing is easier if you can check for a parry happening without taking your eyes off the action.
* You can see the actual wall block, stamina drop and hit effects.
To parry or not to parry
The next important thing is to understand which attacks can be parried and which cannot be parried. Alas, parrying is not everything. As a way of distinguishing, you can think of “attacks with weapons can be roughly parried”. However, even weapon attacks, jump attacks, special moves, and weapon attacks from super-large bosses are almost impossible to parry. Of course, except for weapon attacks, fire can’t parry, nor can projectiles and magic (except for some combat maneuver parry). The same goes for animal attacks. The list of “no parry” confirmed by the author when he was made into a wild animal is as follows.
・Magic and prayers formed by them as well as weapons and missiles (requires special combat drills)
・Jump attack and grab attack
・Attack by swinging whips and hammers attached to chains
・Weapon attack of super boss
・Attack of all animals such as shrimp, crab, bear, octopus, ground spray, flying enemy
・ Large enemies such as trolls, virgin dolls and some bosses
Boss or not, it’s safe to assume that an attack with the handle of a weapon in your hand can basically be parried. I haven’t verified all the movements of all the enemy characters, so I believe I can check them by hand. The exception I would say, though, is the bird attack in Stormtown Castle. They have blades on their legs, so if they attack with those blades, they can parry. If you’ve been boiled by a bird, see how it flips over and falls to the ground. This “feel of doing things” is also one of Parry’s charms. You can also target the fall of mounted enemies. It’s one of the comfortable ways to use it, while having the practicality of getting off the horse quickly.
Challenge the nasty guy with parry
Sorry to talk about Parry so far, but Parry’s powerful enemies to work effectively are limited. Whether it can be done or not is different. In addition, there are multiple strong enemies that cannot be parried, and the risk is further increased in multiple battles such as a group of enemies. This tendency was especially evident in the second half of the game. But, for sure, in a game of parrying an enemy’s attack, you can feel the sense of accomplishment of becoming a special habit. For a strong enemy, parry is especially effective. He is often referred to as a strong enemy, and is a “Knight of the Crucible” who has appeared in many scenes.
Crucible Knights have different weapon types. However, most motions are circumventable. It is undeniable that the attack is ferocious, with shield strikes, stomps, grabs, tail strikes, slides, kicks, tackles and more. However, if you look closely, each action is very simple. Especially the great sword type swings slowly and has enough space to decide a parry by watching the attack firmly. The more you get used to it, the more you will be able to parry, and the relatively easy-to-understand parrying incompetence attacks are also intertwined, so if you can fight one-on-one, it seems to be a suitable parrying partner as a practice partner. For this reason, the author personally calls the boss “Teacher Crucible”. Of course it is possible to practice with normal small fish enemies, but there are many enemies who are reluctant to attack because of AI. In this regard, the Spartan education of the constantly attacking Crucibles may be more suitable for practice.
* Mr. Crucible’s lessons
Also, the Crucible Knight is a strong enemy, not afraid at all, there is not much difference, and it is easy to understand if you fight normally. Considering that almost all unwavering attacks can be converted into attack opportunities, it can be said that parrying challenges is more than enough. Also, there are grave guards who can easily understand the swing of the hammer (can’t parry with chain attacks), and despite the strange moves (spin, magic, floating attacks can’t parry). Surprisingly, it’s easy to give Parry There are many bosses out. If you are proficient at parrying, you may find it one of your tactical options. Also, when parrying, use weapons with high lethal damage such as daggers, or use them as secondary weapons to enhance the effect.
However, the block operation of the multi-headed boss battle also requires tact and luck. Since it is extremely difficult to see through two attacks at the same time, it is necessary to take turns blocking attacks that are sure to be parried, while continuing to run away. On the other hand, depending on the type of enemy and luck, there may be a rhythm that alternates between the two, which feels good. Pleasure for risk. Also, although it is a story without body and cover, when Parry cannot win no matter what, switching to another tactic is the key to Parry, who has loved him for a long time. In validating the writing of this article, the author was somewhat disappointed with Parry and his skills. Let’s switch before it burns out.
Parrying is fun
As with various combat maneuvers, Parry also provides unique fun. However, one of the charms of this work is that players can combine their own tactics and fight. It is better to challenge and defeat the enemy with techniques that every fading man can persuade, not just parry. Whether you’re already a Parry fan or haven’t used Parry, we hope this article was useful to you.
In this article, we use “Practice/Foundation” as the first part to convey Parry’s basics and practices. The next sequel will be “Apps/Technology”, which will include combat maneuvers for parry types such as “Golden Parry”, “Tauren Field” and “Storm Wall”, equipment parry performance other than Buckler, and “parry” Elden Ring. “I will explain the mechanism.
