The committee, dubbed the “Virtual Ocean Project”, will pass from 2019. We are working on it.
In 2021, we will use the latest IT/VR technology and underwater drones to provide online courses for students in many elementary schools, junior high schools, and inpatient classes across the country.
By opening the “VR space” used in the project to the public on the XR platform “DOOR” provided by NTT, it becomes possible for various people to understand the ocean and marine environmental issues in the VR space. …This initiative will be implemented as part of the Nippon Foundation’s “Sea and Japan Project”.
How to participate
You can enter the VR space by clicking on the item’s URL (see below) on your PC or smartphone. Enjoy a variety of content while walking around the area, as if you were in an underwater base. Additionally, there are multiple VR spaces, each of which can be switched back and forth.

【Learn about the sea in the VR space “Classroom of the Sea”】
In the VR space with the theme of an undersea base, content related to the sea is scattered, and you can learn about the importance of the ocean and the problems of the ocean (marine debris problem, warming, etc.).
At the same time, there are a lot of fun elements like changing the clothes of the underwater drone object and the original avatar of this project, and warping to other submarine bases.
【Virtual Ocean Project とは】
Through the VR content experience, we are working to communicate the brilliance of the ocean and the problems that are happening in the ocean, such as the problem of microplastics and ocean acidification, to a broad generation.
For the 2019 event, experience booths will be set up at Hakone-en Aquarium and Yokohama Hakkeijima Sea Paradise, combining 360-degree live video of underwater drones and VR technology, as if riding an underwater drone in the aquarium of the aquarium Take a dip. We let you experience the sea in VR, just like you are.
In 2020, 360-degree zoom image VR and underwater drone cameras aim to reduce the chance of going out to sea due to the effects of corona injury and physical disability, and close the experience gap for children who cannot go to sea. We run an online sea study class that combines experience.
In 2021, we will continue to conduct multiple online study-at-sea courses in our residency programs across Japan. In addition to the online courses we have completed so far, we have also held courses in VR spaces so that we can learn about the ocean through new experiences.
Over the next year, we will continue to advance projects that use cutting-edge IT technology to make learning about the oceans more accessible to more people.
