iOS/iPadOS 15.4 distribution begins. Finally got “Face ID release in mask” and universal control –Engadget Japanese

Apple rolled out iOS 15.4 and iPad OS 15.4 earlier on the 15th. Finally, two new features are available: Face ID Authentication in Face Mask (iOS only) and Universal Control (iPadOS only).

For iOS and iPad OS, you can update manually by checking the notification when the update arrives or by checking “Settings – General – Software Update”.

Face ID authentication in face shields (iOS 15.4)

This feature scans the area around the eyes to verify identity even if the lower half of the face is covered by a mask. As with regular Face ID authentication, you can unlock your iPhone, authenticate when purchasing with Apple Pay, and use it as a passcode for third-party apps.

In iOS 14.5, “Unlock on Apple Watch” was added, but Apple Pay payment authentication is not possible there.

To use Face ID with a mask, you need to re-register your face (no need to wear a mask).

After updating to iOS 15.4, you will be asked on reboot if you want to register Face ID with a mask, and if so, Face ID registration will be restarted. If you skip this, you can enable it later ([設定]>[Face IDとパスコード]> Turn on “Use Face ID when wearing a mask”).

Also, if you use multiple glasses, scanning one for each will improve the accuracy of face recognition. Apple explains that it recognizes “unique features” around the eyes rather than looking at the entire face, but glasses also appear to be considered part of the “unique features”…

However, this feature is only available on the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 series. It is speculated that the reason why it cannot be used on the previous iPhone X, iPhone XS/XS Max and iPhone 11 series may be due to the improved performance of the TrueDepth camera for face recognition on the iPhone 12 and subsequent models.

Universal Control

This feature allows you to use a single Mac’s mouse, trackpad, or keyboard to control a nearby Mac or iPad. For example, if you hold the iPad close to the Mac, the pointer moves to the iPad side, and both work seamlessly with one operating system.

That is, you can use the mouse and keyboard on the Mac side to move the cursor and enter characters even if the mouse and keyboard are not connected to the iPad. You can also drag and drop files between the two.

Originally scheduled to be released in the fall of 2021 with macOS 12, it was delayed to “next spring (spring 2022)”. It’s finally time to officially debut. However, on the Mac side, it is also necessary to update to macOS Monterey 12.3, which is also being distributed at the same time.
